The IAF and PRGMEA have jointly launched the IAF-PRGMEA Global Fashion Award (IPGFA). It will be Pakistan’s largest sustainable fashion competition and it will be fully synchronized with the IAF’s 35th World Fashion Convention that will be held in Lahore, Pakistan November 12th and 13th. The top ten finalists of the competition will be presenting their creations at the Gala Dinner at the 35th IAF Convention on November 12th, 2019. This dinner will be held at an iconic location in Lahore. Within the theme of sustainability, this competition will challenge young designers to put their creative prowess to the test by proving their ability to transform textile waste into wearable, appealing and commercially viable products. Participants will be young Pakistani designers recruited with the support of the major Pakistani fashion design institutes.

The IPGFA has been initiated by PRGMEA Board of Directors member dr. Ayyaz. It has been build with the support of the IAF, international fashion design experts Leontien Wagenaar and Damon Frank Giannoccaro and FashionClash director general Branko Popovich.

This design award is unique because it combines competition and the practical work this entails with education. The competition works to educate young fashion designers about sustainable design techniques and theories. These will actually be taught in a special PRGMEA workshop given by dr. Ayyaz. In order to prepare this workshop, the IAF has arranged a train the trainer program for Dr. Ayyaz who has visited the IAF and Dutch industry association MODINT in Zeist and Fashion for Good, SLCP and Amsterdam Denim City in Amsterdam. The educational program that is part of the award is therefore the outcome of a unique collaboration between PRGMEA and global leaders in sustainability.

The competition will be more than a standalone event. The aim is that it forms the first of an annually recurring series. But the competition is also meant as a starting point for a larger role of PRGMEA in supporting the Pakistani apparel industry to become more sustainable. And of course, it forms an important part of the IAF World Fashion Convention, where traditionally during the main dinner after the first conference day, the fashion component of the host country’s industry is brought to life.
